This collaboration is part of Timbuktoo, a UNDP-led initiative aimed at boosting innovation, entrepreneurship, and investment in African startups.
Under the partnership, Africell will deliver vital connectivity services, including broadband internet, 4G MiFi devices, and Internet of Things (IoT) connected devices to UniPods. These technological enhancements will enable young innovators to access essential digital tools necessary for developing, testing, and scaling their ideas into commercially viable businesses. The improved digital infrastructure will supplement existing training and acceleration programs offered within these hubs, fostering a more conducive environment for startup growth.
Ziad Dalloul, CEO of the Africell Group, highlighted the significance of the partnership: “This collaboration leverages the strengths of each partner by combining Africell’s connectivity expertise with UNDP’s innovation network. By equipping UniPods in Sierra Leone and The Gambia with Africell’s flagship internet services, we are investing in African youth and helping to transform raw talent into successful businesses.”
The initiative aims to reduce technical barriers that often hinder the transition from innovative ideas to market-ready products. Complementary programs include training in robotics, entrepreneurship, and digital skills, further amplifying the social and economic impact of the effort.
Timbuktoo’s broader goal is to mobilize $1 billion to improve the livelihoods of 100 million Africans and create 10 million new, decent jobs. By focusing on supporting startups and technological development across the continent, the program seeks to accelerate Africa’s digital transformation and economic growth through innovative ecosystems and strategic partnerships.
