Teraco Data Centre Academy empowers South African talent

Launched in 2022, the Teraco Data Centre Academy has emerged as a vital initiative to address South Africa’s pressing shortage of skilled professionals in the data centre industry.

Established by Teraco, one of Africa’s leading data centre operators, the programme aims to cultivate a pipeline of capable technicians while fostering employment opportunities, particularly for individuals from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Academy offers an intensive, year-long training programme that combines classroom-based learning with practical experience. Participants undergo a six-month technical training phase, focused on core data centre operations such as electrical systems — including UPS and generators — HVAC, fire suppression, Occupational Health & Safety, and emergency procedures. Following this, learners spend another six months gaining hands-on experience at Teraco’s operational data centres, equipping them with real-world skills to operate and maintain mission-critical infrastructure.

Since its inception, the programme has enrolled 80 learners, all from previously disadvantaged communities. Remarkably, 90% of these participants have successfully completed the training. Around half of the graduates have secured employment within Teraco, while the rest have found roles across the broader data centre and ICT sectors. Beyond technical skills, the Academy also emphasises teamwork, problem-solving, and independent thinking—competencies essential for thriving in dynamic, high-pressure environments.

A core pillar of the programme is its focus on diversity and inclusion. Recognising industry-wide gender imbalances, Teraco has prioritised gender diversity within the Academy, with over 60% of participants being women. This proactive approach aims to promote broader equity in the tech sector and serve as a model for industry transformation.

The programme unfolds in three phases. The initial phase involves accredited institutions delivering classroom instruction on key systems such as electrical infrastructure and cooling technologies. The second phase transitions learners into practical applications within Teraco’s data centres, where they observe and participate in daily operations, safety standards, and internal processes. In the final phase, learners undergo assessments to determine their readiness for potential permanent employment, completing a comprehensive cycle of education and hands-on experience.

In addition to technical training, the Academy places strong emphasis on workplace readiness and personal development. Participants receive instruction in communication skills, conflict resolution, presentation techniques, and client service. Modules on financial literacy, time management, and personal growth prepare learners for the challenges of professional life. Mentorship programmes connect learners with industry professionals who provide guidance, support, and insight into career pathways, fostering a sense of community and belonging within Teraco.

To ensure ongoing effectiveness, Teraco continuously refines the programme based on participant feedback and industry developments. Updates to curriculum, resource allocation, and feedback mechanisms enable the Academy to remain relevant and scalable, with the potential for replication in other regions.
