Meta and Safaricom prepare to link Kenya and Oman with new subsea cable

In a move to bolster internet capacity and improve connectivity between Africa and the Middle East, Meta and Safaricom are planning a new subsea cable connecting Kenya to Oman.
The project, known as the Daraja Fibre Optic Cable, was recently disclosed when Safaricom filed an environmental report with Kenya’s National Environment Management Authority (Nema).

The government of Chad has issued a stern ultimatum to mobile operators Airtel and Moov Africa, demanding that they connect to the country’s national fibre-optic backbone within seven days or face potential sanctions.
The directive followed a meeting between Telecommunications Minister Boukar Michel and executives from both companies amid ongoing frustrations over network performance.

Djibouti Telecom plans extension of DARE1 Subsea Cable to South Africa

Djibouti Telecom has announced plans to extend its regional subsea cable, Djibouti Africa Regional Express 1 (DARE1), southward along Africa’s east coast to expand connectivity, improve route diversity, and support growing digital demand.
Since becoming operational in 2021, the DARE1 cable system has connected Djibouti City with Bosaso and Mogadishu in Somalia, as well as Mombasa, Kenya, offering a capacity of 36Tbps across three fibre pairs along the Horn of Africa.

Niger has officially inaugurated a new Internet Exchange Point (IXP) in Niamey in a move aimed at enhancing the country’s digital infrastructure.
The ceremony was led by Adji Ali Salatou, Minister of Communications and New Information Technologies, who underscored the initiative’s significance in improving national connectivity.
