Telemedia, provider of media, communication and broadcast services in Southern Africa, has partnered with satellite engineering specialist Q-KON to deliver Twoobii-OneWeb Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity to live broadcast and field production teams operating across South Africa.

Broadcasting live from unpredictable and remote environments presents severe connectivity hurdles. News crews, outside broadcast (OB) units, and production teams frequently operate in regions where terrestrial fibre, fixed-line infrastructure, or mobile cellular networks are congested, unreliable, or entirely absent. For media organisations, network failures during live feeds can mean delayed reporting, lost coverage, and costly operational downtime.

To eliminate these barriers, Telemedia has deployed Q-KON’s Twoobii-OneWeb LEO service, paired with Telemedia’s portfolio of broadcast data stream management technologies. The solution combines OneWeb’s high-throughput, low-latency satellite constellation with ultra-portable, rapidly deployable terminal hardware, allowing field teams to establish secure, stable communications links in minutes – regardless of geographic location or local infrastructure constraints.

Key benefits delivered through the partnership include

  • High-Throughput, Low-Latency Performance: Sub-70ms latency enables seamless real-time video transmission, audio feeds, and consistent upload speeds that broadcasters need directly from the field.
  • Rapid Deployment for Breaking News: The compact, low-profile design of the Twoobii-OneWeb flat panel terminal allows crews to set up, connect, and broadcast instantly during fast-moving events.
  • Complete Network Independence: Bypasses local network congestion and infrastructure blackouts to maintain 100% transmission stability.
  • Operational Mobility: Empowers newsrooms and field directors with seamless, flexible connectivity for rural reporting, community events, and remote productions.

Patrick Conroy, CEO at Telemedia, commented: “Field reporting requires absolute reliability, especially outside major metros. Partnering with Q-KON to harness Twoobii-OneWeb LEO satellite technology ensures our teams have the speed and connectivity needed to deliver uninterrupted live coverage from virtually anywhere.”

David Swanepoel, technical account manager at Q-KON, added: “Live broadcast leaves no room for latency or dropouts. By combining our Twoobii-OneWeb LEO service with the Telemedia advantages, we are providing the industry with a seamless, high-capacity connection anywhere in the region to power the future of mobile newsgathering.”

Through this strategic alignment, Telemedia and Q-KON continue to strengthen field communications infrastructure across Southern Africa, ensuring media organisations remain operational and connected under any circumstance.
