Nigeria urged to prioritise local data storage
Share on LinkedInShare on Twitter

As Nigeria accelerates its digital transformation journey, the importance of data sovereignty — ensuring that data generated within the country is stored, governed, and protected domestically — has become increasingly vital.

Recent worldwide outages affecting major international platforms have underscored the risks of over-reliance on foreign infrastructure, which can lead to disruptions in financial services, authentication systems, and national security operations.

Relying heavily on overseas data centres exposes Nigerian institutions to service interruptions caused by external outages, shifting international policies, limited control over data governance, and potential cybersecurity vulnerabilities. To secure its digital future, Nigeria must prioritize keeping critical data within its borders, governed by local laws and protected by domestic infrastructure.

Central to Nigeria’s data sovereignty efforts is Galaxy Backbone (GBB), a government-owned provider of secure digital infrastructure. GBB offers the expertise, capacity, and resilience needed to host national data locally, thereby enhancing security and ensuring operational continuity. The organization operates Tier III data centres built to meet global standards, offering high uptime, redundancy, advanced security controls, and secure colocation services. Additionally, a Tier IV data centre is available for backup and business continuity purposes, giving organizations confidence in their data hosting arrangements.

Hosting data locally through GBB’s infrastructure delivers numerous benefits, including reduced latency, improved performance, better regulatory compliance, and decreased exposure to foreign disruptions. GBB’s sovereign cloud platform enables government agencies, banks, fintech firms, telecom operators, and private enterprises to run mission-critical operations entirely within Nigeria. This platform provides faster access to data, local cybersecurity expertise, minimized downtime, and robust business continuity, empowering organizations to innovate without dependence on external providers.

The overarching message is clear: Nigeria must prioritize building and utilizing its own digital infrastructure. Public institutions, private companies, and multinational corporations are encouraged to host data locally, colocate servers within GBB facilities, and leverage GBB’s cloud services for critical operations. Such measures will strengthen organizational security, ensure operational resilience, and support Nigeria’s broader objectives of digital independence and economic stability.

Galaxy Backbone positions itself as the secure, sovereign, and future-ready partner for Nigeria’s data needs, committed to protecting the nation’s digital assets and keeping them firmly under Nigerian control.
