YTL Power International Bhd is considering entering the South African market within the next one or two years, with plans to develop data centres and establish itself as a power producer, according to local media reports.

Executive Director Yeoh Keong Hann revealed that the company aims to expand its footprint in the region, motivated by opportunities in both energy and water management sectors. He noted that the South African government has also expressed interest in leveraging YTL’s expertise in water management solutions.

In a notable development, YTL was invited to attend the G20 summit in South Africa, which concluded recently, by President Cyril Ramaphosa. This invitation underscores the increasing recognition of YTL’s capabilities and potential regional influence. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was also present at the summit and subsequently travelled to Kenya as part of his broader three-country African tour.

YTL Power, primarily known for its operations in Malaysia, also manages a power generation business in Singapore and a water utility in the UK. The company’s strategic move into South Africa reflects its broader ambitions to expand its infrastructure and utility services across emerging markets.
