Teraco has announced the completion of a significant expansion at its CT2 campus in Cape Town and the initiation of a new expansion at its CT1 facility.
The CT2 expansion, located in the Brackenfell area and owned by Digital Realty, increases the facility’s total critical IT load to 50MW.
Jan Hnizdo, CEO of Teraco, emphasized that this expansion highlights their ongoing commitment to meeting Africa’s demand for large-scale, hyperscale data infrastructure: “this facility enhances Platform Teraco by offering clients scalable on-demand capacity, proven resilience, an interconnected ecosystem, and a wide range of low-latency connectivity options.”
Plans for CT2 Phase II were announced in November 2023. The first phase, completed in 2021, comprised 25,000 sqm (269,000 sq ft) of building space, 8,000 sqm (86,100 sq ft) of data hall area, and 18MW of capacity.
In addition, Teraco has commenced an expansion of its original Cape Town data center, CT1, located in the Rondebosch area. Currently offering 3MW across 2,500 sqm, the project will add 1,000 sqm of new data halls and 2MW of critical IT load, increasing total capacity to 5MW by early 2027.
“This investment reflects our confidence in Cape Town as one of Africa’s most digitally connected cities. CT1 is where our journey began in 2008, and by expanding it, we aim to meet growing client demand for interconnection and deployment capacity while reinforcing our long-term commitment to the region’s digital future,” said Hnizdo.
Teraco’s original facility, CT1, was acquired in 2023 within the Great Westerford building. The company was founded in 2008 and, following Digital Realty’s majority stake acquisition in January 2022 — valued at approximately $3.5 billion — its total capacity across all campuses is projected to reach 191MW. This includes the Isando Campus (JB1/JB3/JB5: 70MW), Bredell Campus (JB2/JB4: 64MW), Cape Town Campus (CT1/CT2: 55MW), and Durban (DB1: 2MW).
