The DRC has finalised a significant agreement with United Investment LMT (UIL), marking a major step toward enhancing the country’s digital landscape.
The deal, finalised late in October, involves a technical and financial partnership valued at approximately $150 million. Its primary goal is to bolster the nation’s digital infrastructure, with a focus on expanding internet access and connectivity.
The project encompasses comprehensive initiatives such as conducting feasibility studies, deploying between 60,000-80,000km of fibre optic cables nationwide, and installing a submarine cable capable of handling 192Tbps.
José Mpanda Kabangu, the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, said that the DRC requires at least 40,000-50,000km of fibre to improve connectivity.
Currently, internet access remains limited across the nation, with less than 30% coverage, and the government is eager to connect all 145 territories across the country as soon as possible.
