The Sierra Leonean government is actively investigating how blockchain technology can support its broader digital transformation agenda.
On 30 October, Minister of Communications, Technology and Innovation Salima Bah hosted a delegation of blockchain experts from the Sovereign Infrastructure for Global Nations (SIGN) group, accompanied by Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to China, Abubakarr Karim.
The ministry indicated that the SIGN team is scheduled to meet with various partners in the coming days to explore specific applications of blockchain that could strengthen the country’s digital ecosystem. This initiative builds upon Sierra Leone’s previous efforts to incorporate blockchain — most notably, the deployment of a national digital identity system in partnership with the United Nations and KIVA in August 2019.
The government’s interest in blockchain aligns with its broader goal to digitally connect all Sierra Leoneans, providing citizens with more transparent, affordable, and needs-based digital services at both national and local levels.
