The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has announced that its new interconnection point in Accra, Ghana, is now operational, representing LINX’s first presence in West Africa.

This development signifies a major step in the organisation’s mission to improve interconnection, bolster digital infrastructure, and enhance the end-user internet experience across the continent.

The technical infrastructure for LINX Accra has been fully installed at two key data centre locations, Onix and PAIX, which constitute the first phase of this strategic interconnection hub. These sites are interconnected with redundant fibre routes, a design feature that distinguishes LINX from other Internet Exchange Points (IXPs). This setup allows networks located at either site to exchange traffic efficiently through peering — a process that offers low latency and cost-effective routing of network traffic.

With over 30 years of global interconnection expertise, LINX aims to provide a neutral, scalable platform for local Internet Service Providers (ISPs), content providers, cloud service firms, and enterprises to exchange data within Ghana. Jennifer Holmes, CEO of LINX, highlighted the significance of the launch, stating that LINX Accra is a major step in supporting Africa’s digital transformation. She noted that by enabling local traffic exchange and connecting Onix and PAIX via their fabric, LINX is helping to develop a more resilient, higher-performing internet ecosystem in the region.

Looking ahead, a third interconnection point is expected to be added in the coming weeks with the launch of the new Digital Realty data centre in Accra, expanding the LINX Accra platform to three access sites. Nurani Nimpuno, LINX’s Head of Global Engagement, emphasised the importance of collaboration with data centre partners, describing them as vital to the success of building IXPs in new regions. She praised Ghana’s engaged data centre community, noting that teamwork is essential for establishing robust internet infrastructure in emerging markets.
