Nugi Group has announced plans to construct a Tier 4 data centre in Calabar, Cross River State, marking a significant step toward advancing Nigeria’s digital infrastructure.
The initiative aims to position Nigeria as a more prominent player in the global data economy, with the new facility expected to enhance the country’s technological landscape.
According to Ugi Augustine, President and Solutions Architect of Nugi Group, the decision to establish the data centre in Calabar goes beyond infrastructure development. Augustine emphasized that the move is a deliberate effort to decentralize Nigeria’s technological investments, which are traditionally concentrated in Lagos and Abuja. He highlighted that Cross River State offers the necessary resources and cost advantages, making it an ideal location for such a high-standard facility. Augustine added that investing in Calabar demonstrates that world-class digital infrastructure can successfully thrive outside Nigeria’s primary commercial hubs.
The project plans incorporate a mix of renewable and conventional energy sources to ensure reliable power supply. The site’s proximity to a waterfall will facilitate hydroelectric energy generation, while there are plans to develop a solar grid capable of storing energy for extended periods. Additionally, natural gas will be converted into electricity to further support the facility’s energy needs. These measures are designed to meet the stringent uptime requirements of 99.99 percent, which are characteristic of Tier 4 data centres.
Augustine also noted that the new data centre could attract multinational technology companies seeking dependable, locally-based data storage solutions. The facility’s strategic location, combined with its focus on sustainable energy and high reliability standards, aims to make Calabar an important hub for digital infrastructure in Nigeria and potentially draw interest from global tech firms looking for secure and resilient data storage options.
