The London Internet Exchange (LINX) and Internet Exchange incubator Asteroid have announced a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening interconnectivity across Africa.
Under this agreement, Asteroid and LINX will collaborate through the end of 2025 to facilitate the transition of customer networks connected at Asteroid’s Mombasa and Nairobi locations to LINX’s interconnection hubs in those cities.
Remco van Mook, CEO of Asteroid, expressed pride in the company’s achievements over the past five years in Kenya, noting how Asteroid’s market entry significantly altered the interconnection landscape. He highlighted the importance of the partnership with LINX, emphasizing that it leverages each organization’s strengths and marks their third successful incubation of an interconnection market.
The transition will be fully supported, ensuring a smooth migration for Asteroid’s customers to LINX’s facilities in Mombasa and Nairobi. Throughout the process, both organizations’ technical teams will collaborate closely to assist customers and address any concerns. LINX CEO Jennifer Holmes highlighted the significance of continuing Asteroid’s legacy, reaffirming LINX’s commitment to fostering interconnection growth in Kenya and supporting the local community as well as the global ecosystem.
Asteroid customers will retain the ability to expand their networks locally and explore new peering opportunities within Kenya, as well as globally through LINX’s locations in the UK, US, and soon, Ghana. They will benefit from LINX’s 24/7 engineering support and access advanced interconnection services, including LINX Private VLANs and innovative solutions like the Microsoft Azure Peering Service (MAPS).
Both organizations will coordinate communication throughout the transition process, which is set to conclude at the end of 2025 when Asteroid ceases operations in Kenya. LINX CEO Jennifer Holmes and Asteroid CEO Remco van Mook will be available for questions at ITW Africa in Nairobi on September 9-10, 2025, marking a significant step toward expanding robust interconnection infrastructure across Africa.
