Africa Data Centres, a division of Cassava Technologies, has announced the successful installation of a self-cooling rack supplied by Gold Synergy at its CPT1 data centre in Cape Town.

This milestone marks a significant step forward in the evolution of high-density computing across Africa and underscores the company’s commitment to deploying sustainable, energy-efficient infrastructure solutions.

Commissioned in January 2025, the innovative self-cooling rack is specifically designed to address the growing demand for high-performance computing while reducing energy consumption. As Africa faces increasing challenges related to power and cooling — particularly driven by the rise of artificial intelligence, big data, and enterprise workloads — advanced cooling technologies like this offer a scalable and environmentally conscious solution.

Gold Synergy, recognised for its expertise in advanced cooling systems, demonstrated the viability of self-contained cooling racks in the African context through this deployment at CPT1. The success of this initiative paves the way for broader adoption of regionally suitable cooling solutions that support environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives.

“Our collaboration with Gold Synergy introduces new efficiencies in high-density hosting. By integrating this cutting-edge cooling solution at CPT1, we are creating a model for how African data centres can scale intelligently while aligning with global sustainability targets. The success of this deployment positions both Africa Data Centres and Gold Synergy to expand CDU-based cooling technologies across the region, supporting Africa’s growing digital infrastructure needs,” said Adil El Youssefi, CEO of Africa Data Centres.

Fortune Utubor, an executive at Gold Synergy, described the solution as a ‘game-changer’ for high-density computing environments. He emphasised that the deployment reflects a shared commitment to energy efficiency and operational excellence, setting a precedent for future innovations in sustainable data centre management.

South Africa continues to serve as a strategic digital hub for the continent, with its reliable infrastructure, advantageous location, and rising demand for cloud and AI services. As enterprises increasingly move mission-critical applications closer to home, the need for infrastructure capable of supporting such demanding workloads efficiently becomes more vital.

The new self-cooling rack not only enhances the CPT1 facility’s hosting capacity without requiring extensive infrastructure modifications but also reinforces Africa Data Centres’ position as the continent’s leading carrier-neutral data centre provider. By reducing reliance on traditional cooling systems, this innovative solution also contributes to operational cost savings for clients and facility operators, further strengthening Africa’s digital transformation journey.
