The Kenyan government has issued an open invitation to suppliers and service providers to support a significant fibre broadband expansion as part of a major development project funded by the World Bank.

The initiative aims to enhance connectivity across Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia through the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project (HoAGDP).

The ICT Authority of Kenya announced that the project will see an investment of approximately US$750 million dedicated to deploying high-capacity fibre optic cables along the 748km Isiolo-Mandera Regional Road Corridor. The total estimated cost of the entire project is around US$896 million, reflecting its regional importance.

The Authority has called for expressions of interest from potential suppliers, contractors, and service providers to participate in a non-binding pre-engagement process ahead of upcoming tenders. Interested parties are required to register by 16 July.

Beyond laying backbone infrastructure, the project encompasses the deployment of last-mile fibre connections, the installation of public Wi-Fi hotspots in schools and hospitals, and the use of solar power to extend connectivity into remote and underserved areas. This comprehensive approach aims to bridge the digital divide and foster regional integration through improved digital infrastructure.
