A devastating fire erupted on 7 July at Telecom Egypt’s prominent 10-story building in Cairo’s Ramses area, resulting in the deaths of four workers and injuring 26 others.
The blaze, which lasted for several hours, caused significant damage and led to a temporary collapse of telecommunications services across the region.
The cause of the fire remains unclear, but authorities confirm it originated on the seventh floor of the building. The incident prompted an emergency response, and rescue efforts are ongoing.
The fire’s impact extended beyond personnel casualties, causing a substantial disruption to mobile networks and internet connectivity. According to NetBlocks, a global outage tracker, connectivity levels dropped to approximately 62% of normal, affecting services such as online payments, communication platforms, and even air traffic operations.
“A fire broke out in one of the equipment rooms at the Ramses switchboard of Telecom Egypt, leading to temporary telecommunications disruption,” said the National Telecom Regulatory Authority.
Telecom Egypt also issued a social media message expressing condolences for those who lost their lives and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured, but they did not specify the cause of the fire.
This tragedy underscores the critical importance of safety measures in infrastructure facilities and highlights the far-reaching consequences of such incidents on national connectivity and economic activities. Investigations are underway to determine the cause and prevent future occurrences.
