Vodacom has officially launched a cutting-edge data centre in Maputo, Mozambique, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s digital landscape. Located in Tchumene, Matola, the construction of this $25 million facility commenced in October 2023, and it is now touted as the largest data centre in the country.
While specific technical details regarding the facility are still under wraps, the data centre is designed to be carrier-neutral. This feature enables it to serve various telecommunications service providers, enhancing competition and service offerings in Mozambique. Additionally, it provides direct access to the 2Africa subsea cable, which is integral to Vodacom Mozambique’s operations.
“Our country now has 18 data centres, including this one from Vodacom Mozambique, which has just been inaugurated. Establishing this data centre is a significant step forward in our country’s digital transformation,” said Prime Minister Benvinda Levi.
Vodacom Mozambique has a history of investing in data infrastructure, having previously established a modular data centre in Matola in 2013. The company has also made strides in enhancing its service offerings, launching commercial 5G services in Maputo in May 2023, with plans to expand this coverage across the country in the coming years.
