The Mauritanian government has announced the completion of the Nouakchott Data Hub, a major infrastructure project initiated in 2021, which is set to officially open on 8 May. This new data centre is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing the country’s digital transformation ambitions.
The government highlighted the strategic importance of the facility, stating on its Facebook page: “This new data centre marks a strategic turning point: our data remains in Mauritania, protected and accessible in a secure national environment. The Nouakchott Data Hub is an essential lever in our digital transition to the future.”
Certified as a Tier 3 facility by the Uptime Institute — an international standard from the U.S.-based organization — the data centre offers full redundancy for all critical components, including dual power supplies. It guarantees an availability rate of 99.982%, translating to an average of just 1.6 hours of outage per year. The centre is accessible to both government agencies and private sector enterprises and features specialized clean rooms designed to host servers and cloud services.
The commissioning of this data hub aligns with Mauritania’s ‘National Digital Transformation Agenda 2022-2025,’ a strategic roadmap that aims to leverage digital technology as a key driver of socioeconomic development. Notable initiatives under this plan include the Khidmaty platform, which provides citizens with seamless access to various government services, as well as the digitization of criminal records, diplomas, visa applications, public procurement processes, and the management of political parties.
