Real estate developer Attacq has announced a partnership with Vantage Data Centres to establish a 50:50 joint venture aimed at constructing a data centre in Waterfall City, Johannesburg.
The new data centre will cover an area of 10,363 square meters across two stories, featuring four dedicated data halls. Construction is currently underway, with completion anticipated by the first quarter of 2026. The estimated investment for the data centre shell is R628 million, supported by a 20-year lease, with Attacq primarily involved in the development of the shell structure.
The data centre will be a part of the JNB1 campus, which spans 30 acres and is slated to include three facilities totalling 60,000 square meters (650,000 square feet). Once fully developed, the campus will provide 80 MW of IT capacity. The initial facility, named JNB11, was completed in 2022 and delivered utilizing prefabricated electrical containers and equipment.
Plans for the JNB1 campus were first revealed in October 2021, with Vantage expressing strong confidence in South Africa’s potential as a data centre hub for sub-Saharan Africa. Antoine Boniface, president of Vantage EMEA, emphasized the strategic advantages of Johannesburg, including its robust IT ecosystem, extensive fibre connectivity, and access to renewable energy resources. The overall planned investment for the campus is projected to exceed R15 billion, with expectations of generating local jobs and positively impacting the economy.
