LINX Kenya reports twenty-fold traffic increase at Inaugural Connect Kenya Event

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has marked a major milestone in Kenya, seeing traffic increase twenty-fold across LINX Nairobi and LINX Mombasa, and a combined maximum peak of over 330Gbps.

It follows the first LINX Connect Kenya member network event in Nairobi recently. The event brought together local Internet Service Providers (ISPs), data centre partners and industry stakeholders to celebrate the growth and success of the LINX interconnection ecosystem in the region.

Since entering the Kenyan market in November 2023, with the launch of its Nairobi Internet Exchange Point (IXP), LINX has built a thriving and dynamic interconnection community of its own.

A key factor in this growth has been LINX’s commitment to collaboration and community building. By working closely with local data centre partners and local stakeholders, LINX has ensured its services are deeply embedded within the Kenyan digital ecosystem. At the same time, LINX brings the strength of its extensive global network of members and partners, helping to connect local ISPs and networks to international opportunities.

Inga Turner, head of existing business at LINX, commented: “The success of our first LINX Connect Kenya event for our members is a testament to the vibrant and rapidly growing interconnection community we’ve built in Nairobi and Mombasa. Our focus on collaboration, working with local partners while bringing global connectivity opportunities to the region, has been central to this success. We are a membership owned IXP where community and transparency is very important to us and we look forward to what’s to come!”

LINX Nairobi is accessible from 4 data centre sites, all interconnected by dual fibre for increased resilience and redundancy.  In Nairobi, LINX also offer the unique Microsoft Azure Peering Service, this allows networks that don’t meet Microsoft’s traffic requirements to have a direct peering session with their cloud services.

LINX Mombasa was also interconnected from day one, allowing networks in iColo’s MBA1 to peer with new global networks arriving at MBA2. The rate of member and traffic growth in Mombasa in just over a year has been quite incredible, hitting maximum traffic peaks of over 210Gbps.

Mombasa serves as a critical global interconnection hub, strategically located on the East African coast and acting as a landing point for multiple international subsea cables connecting Africa to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. By establishing a presence in Mombasa, LINX is enabling greater traffic localisation, reduced latency, and improved resilience for networks operating both within Kenya and across the wider region.

Further accelerating its growth, LINX entered into a co-operation agreement with Asteroid in September 2025, acquiring their customer base in Kenya, expanding LINX’s local community and strengthened its position as a leading interconnection provider in East Africa.

As LINX continues to invest in infrastructure, partnerships, and community engagement, Kenya is set to remain a key strategic market in its global expansion.
