What’s the cost of a half-degree? Vaisala’s new Origo slashes cooling waste in data centres

Approximately 80% of the world’s data centers still rely on air cooling, and even a small temperature measurement error of just 0.5°C can lead to significant energy waste–potentially over $800 million annually in a 10 MW data center, totaling about $8 billion over ten years. Accurate, stable environmental measurement is crucial for optimizing cooling efficiency and reducing energy costs.

Vaisala introduces Origo, a next-generation modular measurement platform designed to deliver ±0.1°C temperature and ±1% RH humidity accuracy. Its precise measurements help prevent overcooling, lowering energy waste while ensuring reliable environmental control–vital for data centers, life science cleanrooms, and other critical facilities.

With the majority of data centers employing air cooling as the baseline, and hybrid systems increasingly common, the ability to monitor environmental parameters accurately at scale is essential. Eliminating the “half-degree” measurement error across the global data center fleet could save approximately $805 million annually in energy costs.

Origo’s flexible, modular design allows monitoring of multiple parameters with Vaisala’s compatible probes, supporting future expansion into other critical environments like cleanrooms, healthcare, and semiconductor manufacturing. Its field-replaceable probes and comprehensive support services ensure long-term reliability, process protection, and resource optimization.

Key Facts:

~12,000 data centers worldwide, with the U.S. and Europe accounting for over half.
Air cooling remains the standard, with hybrid cooling growing for high-density AI workloads.
A 0.5°C measurement error can cost a 10 MW data center over $800,000 in energy over a decade.
Vaisala’s Origo provides high-accuracy, reliable environmental monitoring.
Modular and multi-parameter, suitable for data centers, cleanrooms, hospitals, and manufacturing facilities.
